    WHAT IS THIS?

As regards the picture of the "odd" tank entitled 'Strange Army Equipment", this is a photo of a British "Mat Layer".
In essance, a British "Churchill" tank AVRE (Assault Vehicle, Royal Engineers) equipped with a 'bobbin' positioned on moveable arms attached to the front of the vehicle. The spindle itself was 9'11" wide and contained a spool of canvas trackway which could be unrolled as the tank progressed, allowing for this and following vehicles to negotiate marshy ground, barbed wire or loose beach "shingle" rocks without the risk of getting bogged down or throwing a track.

    Hope this helps, Don Lightbody
